Bachelor of Health & Society

The Health and Society courses expose the students to contemporary issues in health and disease for human and society. The courses are designed to, amongst other things, foster reflection on how we measure health, analyze why some people are healthier than others, and investigate what might be done to improve the health of individuals and populations. The courses may also examine why different diseases and health risks are unevenly distributed within and between human populations. Students will be introduced to contrasting approaches to understanding disease causation, population health and disease profiles and intervention case studies. The courses also lead students to consider the needs, institutions and participants involved in health and how management strategies and organizational structures can be used to effectively fulfill the mandate of a health system. We focus on health as a local and global issue. The Health and Society classes will include the following topics:

Bachelor of Health & Society degree will give you essential skills to understand the social context in which medicine and health care are practiced nationally and internationally, and the power to advocate and work for change. This degree can help you engage directly with people whose health needs are often under threat or being ignored. As an allied health practitioner, you will learn to identify, investigate, analyze and evaluate health issues and programs through your knowledge of physiology, epidemiology, healthcare systems, health promotion, policy analysis and health sociology. As a combined health and social worker, you will be in a powerful position to address inequality and injustice and improve the quality of life for individuals, groups and whole communities.

There will be variety of teaching and learning strategies are used including lectures, seminars, workshops, and oral tutorials. Students are expected also to read textbook materials and do assigned homework. Courses in general are assessed separately using a mixture of writing examinations, coursework, presentations and projects.

With health and society degree, you will have particularly strong opportunities in planning and organizing health services and education and policy in clinics hospitals, community organizations, local government, public-health departments and managed care and related institutions. You can also work as health consultant, family therapist, counsellor or psychotherapist.
