Al-Nasser Sponsored Thalassemia Charity Bazaar

An awareness function and a charity bazaar were organized last Monday by Friends of Thalassemia Patients Initiative in conjunction with Yemeni Society for Thalassemia Patients (YSTP).

In a speech delivered on the occasion, the Rector, Prof Abdullah Tahish, thanked the YSTP for contributing to the Patients’ relief. He confirmed the University’s constant readiness to actively stand by any initiative that works towards protecting community against genetic and chronic diseases. The Rector declared that Al-Nasser grants scholarships for thalassemia patients so as to help them get their education as an essential human right. He stressed the need for the concerted effort by health and education workers towards raising the public awareness, controlling infectious diseases, and providing relief to patients.

Mr Salah Ali, a member of the YSTP administration board and the Follow-up Official, gave a speech in which he pointed out to an alarming increase in the number of patients. About 4000 patients have been registered at the YSTP headquarter in Sana’a. He highlighted the premarital blood test as an effective means for the prevention of such a chronic disease. He mentioned a number of cooperative medical centers that offer up to 80% check-up discounts such as National Blood Test Labs, Azal Hospital, and El-Awlaqi Labs.

He called attendees, especially the carriers of rare blood groups, for blood donation at El-Saba’een Hospital since a patient’s survival might wholly rely on the monthly transfused blood. He thanked Al-Nasser University for sponsoring the function and the charity bazaar inviting other educational institutions to follow its example. A number of expressive shows, chants, and speeches were presented at the event. Moreover, a poem was read by student Amal El-Mikhlafi. The addresses delivered by the Rector, the YSTP representative, and Dr Ibtisam El-Muayad, head of Laboratory Dept, cast the light on the importance of preventing thalassemia by taking premarital tests. They also asked the attendees to actively participate in the Society’s different activities, especially educating the community about the hazards of such a chronic disease.

In addition to Prof Abdullah Tahish and Mr Salah Ali, all of Mr Ali El-Thayfani, the Secretary-General, Dr Abdulkareem El-Zumor, Dean of FMS, Dr Muhammed El-Kuhali, Dean of FAS, attended the event.

Thalassemia is a genetic disease that could be passed on from parents to children. It is a blood disease in which red blood cells are damaged due to the insufficient hemoglobin produced by the bone marrow. As a result, a thalassemia patient needs a monthly blood transfusion in order to live on.

وأعلن عن تقديم منح دراسية مجانية في جامعة الناصر للطلاب المصابين بهذا المرض حتى يتمكنوا من الحصول على حقوقهم كاملة في المجتمع واولها التعليم.

مؤكدا على ضرورة ان تتكاتف جهود جميع العاملين في قطاع الصحة والتعليم خصوصا الهيئات التعليمية والتوعوية والخيرية الحكومية والخاصة على مكافحة الأمراض المعدية والوقوف بجانب الشرائح التي تحتاج الى مساعده منها الفئات المصابة بالأمراض الوراثية والمعدية. وقال الأستاذ صلاح علي مسؤول المتابعات وعضو الهيئة الإدارية بالجمعية اليمنية لمرضى الثلاسيما في كلمة توعوية له أوضح فيها أن هناك ارتفاع مستمر ومقلق في أعداد المصابين بهذا المرض حيث زادت اعدادهم المسجلة في مركز الجمعية الرئيس بصنعاء على أكثر من أربعة ألف مصاب من الذكور والإناث خلال فترة وجيزة. وأشار الى أن الفحص قبل الزواج هو الوسيلة الوحيدة للوقاية من هذا المرض وهنالك العديد من الجهات التي تتعاون مع الجمعية في هذا الصدد وتقدم تخفيضات تصل الى 80% من قيمة الفحوصات وهي المختبر الوطني لفحص الدم ومستشفى آزال ومختبرات العولقي الطبية. ودعا الحاضرين الى التبرع بالدم عن طريق مستشفى السبعين بصنعاء خصوصا الذين يحملون الفصائل النادرة خصوصا وأن حياة المريض تعتمد على الدم المنقول من المتبرعين شهرياً.

وشكر جامعة الناصر على رعايتها المهرجان وإقامة البازار والطبق الخيري داعيا الجهات الخاصة والجامعات والمدارس الى تبني مثل هذه المهرجانات لتوعية الطلاب باخطار الإصابة بهذا المرض. الحفل شمل العديد من الفقرات الفنية المعبرة والوصلات الانشادية وقصيدة شعرية القتها الطالبة صفا المخلافي وكلمات توعوية ألقاها مندوب الجمعية ورئيس الجامعة والدكتورة ابتسام المؤيد رئيسة قسم المختبرات بالجامعة وجهوا من خلالها الطلاب الى ضرورة الوقاية من هذا المرض بالفحص قبل الزواج ودعوا الطلاب والحاضرين الى التفاعل مع أنشطة الجمعية وتوعية الأسر والمجتمع بخطورة الإصابة بهذا المرض الذي يستمر مدى الحياة في حالة الإصابة به. حضر الحفل رئيس الجامعة الدكتور عبدالله طاهش وعضو الهيئة الإدارية بالجمعية الأستاذ صالح علي وامين عام الجامعة الأستاذ علي الذيفاني وعميد كلية العلوم الطبية الدكتور عبدالكريم الزمر وعميد كلية العلوم الإدارية الدكتور محمد الكهالي. ويعتبر مرض الثلاسيميا نوع من أنواع تكسر كريات الدم الحمراء وتتمثل خطورته في انتقاله من الأبوين الحاملين للجينات الوراثية (التي تحمل صفة المرض) الى الأبناء وسببه عجز نخاع العظام عن تصنيع كمية كافية من خضاب الدم السليم(الهيموجلوبين) كما هو في خلايا الدم الحمراء الطبيعية ،وتعتمد حياة المريض على الدم المنقول من المتبرعين شهرياً.
