ANU Organizes Thalassemia Charity Campaign

A thalassemia charity campaign was organized by Medical Labs & IS departments, Al-Nasser University in collaboration with Yemen Society for Thalassemia Patients (YSTP) at FMS on Wed, March 14, 2018. Conducted under the slogan “the nation is well as they are well,” the campaign intended to introduce thalassemia and the methods of protection against it.

Opening with the national anthem and Quran recitation, the event started with the speech of Dr. Mukhtar Ezzumor (Head of medical Labs Department & the event coordinator) who noted to the humanitarian, religious, and national responsibilities associated with raising the community’s awareness and relieving its grievances. The event, according to him, was sponsored by Al-Nasser University so as to contribute to the relief of thalassemia patients. He extended words of thanks to Medical Labs junior and IS senior students for preparing and implementing the campaign, to the University’s board for its support,  and to whosoever actively participated in the campaign.

Prof. Abdullah Tahish (the Chancellor) confirmed that serving the community is one of the University’s basic goals that it implements by supporting any of the like organizations. Praising the participants’ efforts, he announced Al-Nasser’s initiative of presenting medical aid to YSTP.

For his part, Mr. Ahmed El-Maqrami (YSTP Chairman) extended his thanks to Al-Nasser University for sponsoring such a national issue—thalassemia is a disease that concerns everyone. He asked the attendees to pass the message of the disease’s outspread and control as far as they can.

Dr. Rasha Ennoud (Officer in charge of awareness raising at YSTP) made a presentation that introduced the disease of thalassemia and cell anemia reviewing its history, syndromes, complications, and medications in addition to the psychological, material and social effects. She confirmed the need for a law that imposes having checkups before getting married to protect upcoming generations against the disease.

Mr. Saleh El-Usaymi (YSTP representative) reviewed the Society’s history, role in raising awareness and disease control. He called for taking an effective part in supporting the society and afflicted patients as well.

A message was also directed by child Anas Saleh (the thalassemia patients emissary) that stressed the importance of conducting pre-marriage checkups to limit the disease and protect children.

The event’s program contained entertaining and purposeful shows in addition to a charity bazaar by which donations were collected for thalassemia patients.

At the end, the YSTP Chairman presented a certificate of appreciation to Al-Nasser University in recognition of its sincere efforts to make the thalassemia campaign a success.

The event was organized in the presence of Mr. Ali El-Thyfani (Secretary General), Dr. Abdulkareem Ezzumor (FMS Dean), faculty members, YSTP representatives, and a large number of students.
